Intensive group mentorship

The art of listening

Learn to read between the lines of what is said, to handle the complexity of relationships and to facilitate constructive conversations.

“In a land of noisy opinions, the wise person is the one who listens beyond what is said.”

Sérgio Luciano

Meet the mentorship↓

12 live sessions, for no more than five people.

The Art of Listening used to be a course with large cohorts. Today it is a mentorship of five people, because the presence and depth we are after require me to be fully with you in every conversation.

In courses with large cohorts, it is common to split people into small rooms to practise. There you are trading impressions with someone as lost as you are — the facilitator is not in the room. With only five people, I follow every sentence, every silence and every hesitation live. I can step in at the exact moment the conversation stalls and show what is happening behind the words.

That size also changes the relationship between people. Over almost three months, the group builds a real intimacy. Nobody has to perform or use generic examples: you bring the conversation that actually hurt, or that went wrong this week, at work, at home or in a friendship, and the whole group leans into it with you. The difference in contexts is what makes the reading richer. One person's learning becomes a living repertoire for everyone else.

What you develop

Three axes that hold the mentorship, in life and at work. Theory gives the conceptual base; the small group makes it possible to practise and refine.

Read between the lines

In a tense conversation, the words say little. What matters is decoding the needs, beliefs and intentions behind what is said.

  • Separate your emotional impact from the other person's real intention
  • Hear the legitimate need hidden under defensive positions
  • Notice when the other person has become a threat in your head

Hold complexity

Stay lucid and present in the discomfort of a hard conversation, without fleeing into silence or exploding.

  • Recognise your own automatic reactions under pressure
  • Move between opposing views without taking a side by reflex
  • Map the inner voices that compete for space inside you during the discussion

Facilitate and lead dialogue

Understand the invisible structure of a conversation, at work or at home, so you can help it continue.

  • Say what is hard with clarity, firmness and without aggression
  • Help people who disagree keep talking
  • Recognise dynamics of power and hierarchy so you can act with maturity

How each session works

Two hours live, with close presence, joining a solid theoretical base and a close study of the group's cases.

  1. 01

    Study and conceptual base

Presentation and deepening of the theories that hold listening: Jungian psychology, Nonviolent Communication and Deep Democracy.

  2. 02

    The group's case studies

Time set aside to lean into the real situations each person brings, looking into what stalled and why.

  3. 03

    Reading together and exercises

With five people looking at the same scene, nuances and blind spots appear that no one would see alone.

  4. 04

    An experiment for the week

You take a question or a shift in stance into your relationships and bring back what happened to open the next session.

Five dimensions, from the inner life to the collective

The path starts with you, moves through relationships and conflict, and reaches the dynamics of power in the group.

  1. 01

    A dive into individuality

    Jungian psychology

The layers and defences you bring into the conversation before the first sentence. Leaving the trap of right and wrong to see human complexity, starting with your own.

  2. 02

    The process of communication

    Nonviolent communication

Feeling, need, intention and impact: what shows up in you and in the other, and what passes unnamed. Saying what is essential with clarity, in search of connection, knowing the reception is not in our hands.

  3. 03

    The condo meeting

    Deep democracy and processwork

The critic, the appeaser, the rebel: the voices arguing inside your head under pressure. Recognising that inner dynamic keeps it from hijacking you in the dialogue.

  4. 04

    The four phases of conflict

    Deep democracy

How tension starts, grows and turns into silence or confrontation. Recognising the phase of the conflict helps you choose wisely whether it is time to step in, step back or hold.

  5. 05

    The power game

    Deep democracy and powerprint

Who speaks, who is heard and who decides changes with the place. In a team, it shows up as role and hierarchy. In a family, a couple or among friends, it takes another form. Understanding the board so you can act with maturity and ethical responsibility.

How the mentorship is structured

A format designed for deep presence, a steady rhythm and close attention to each person.

  • 12 weekly sessions

About three months, with time to practise in real life between one session and the next.

  • 2 hours live each session

Time to study the theme and to look closely at each person's situations.

  • Only 5 people

A small group, so attention does not scatter and every session keeps closeness, listening and depth.

  • Online and live

Interactive sessions by video call. Sessions are recorded, but the living presence of the group is the heart of the process.

  • Portuguese or English

Dedicated cohorts organised by preferred language.

Who it makes sense for

  • People in conversations that repeat

The same sentences, the same silences, at home, at work or in a friendship, and the wish to understand what keeps repeating.

  • Someone in the middle of a tension they did not create

In a family, a team or a group of friends, and you want to help without taking a place that is not yours.

  • People who work with people

Leadership, education, mediation, therapy or facilitation. Repertoire only helps when it fits the real relationship, and the group is not a class of the same profession.

  • People who want depth with close accompaniment

People who want to go beyond books and talks and study their own conversations in a protected, focused setting.

For people who live conversations that repeat, at work, at home or among friends. The mix of contexts is what makes the group rich.

It is not superficial public-speaking training, and it is not individual therapy. It is a deep mentorship for people who want to develop maturity, reading and firmness in human conversations.

Who leads it

Sérgio Luciano

Since 2012 I have facilitated groups of young people and adults on communication, leadership and behaviour, in Brazil and abroad. I also accompany difficult conversations and mediation. Before that shift, I spent ten years in logistics, six of them in process management and continuous improvement at a multinational. In 2017 I co-founded Colibrí, creating programmes, trainings and tools for relational communication.

My approach combines the practice of Nonviolent Communication and Deep Democracy with the rigour of Jungian psychology and the analysis of power dynamics, in organisations and in everyday relationships. I was a weekly columnist for UOL Ecoa, translating behaviour and relationships for a wide audience without resorting to jargon.

  • Specialisation in Process Work, Process Work Institute (USA)
  • Postgraduate degree and specialisation in Jungian psychology
  • Training in peacemaking circles
  • Certification in Self, Business and Master Coaching

What people who took part say

Accounts from participants about the impact of the experience on their real relationships.

“Sometimes we only want to meet our own needs and end up not giving proper attention to the people we relate to.”

Participant

“I saw 29 adult, intelligent, experienced people wasting precious time because together we could not find a way to transform the emotional climate.”

Facilitator

“What moved me most was thinking about how some negative feelings are tied to unmet needs. And how reactive and unempathetic I am.”

Participant

“I met concepts that widened my view so much that I feel small before so much knowledge, but with an enormous potential to transform and be transformed.”

Clinical psychologist

“Since much of what I research on nonviolent communication is based on Marshall Rosenberg, it was interesting to get a view based on Deep Democracy, which turns out to be complementary.”

Researcher

“What moved me most was realising the violence we practise every day without noticing. And recognising the image of the enemy.”

Frequently asked questions

How much does the mentorship cost?+

The price and payment options are sent to anyone who gets in touch. Write a message and I will share the conditions for the next cohort.

When does the next group start?+

Cohorts open periodically. Because there are only five places, people on the interest list hear before the general announcement.

What if I need to miss a session?+

Every session is recorded and made available to the group. Even so, the mentorship rests on the live exchange, so the commitment to being present is essential.

How are the times set?+

The times are agreed in advance for each cohort, always in options that work for people who work during the day.

Do I need to have taken a communication course before?+

No. We do not require any prior training. The theory is taught from the start and immediately anchored in the real situations you bring.

Can I commission this closed format for my company?+

The open group mixes contexts on purpose: work, home, friendship. Alongside it, I run closed programmes for boards, leadership and teams, on request.

Communication is to relationships what blood is to the body: it has to flow for the organism to stay healthy.
